Selwyn Segal

Selwyn Segal

For over half a century the name "Selwyn Segal" has struck a chord of tenderness and compassion in the hearts of Johannesburg's Jewish community.  More than a place, Selwyn Segal is a concept, an ideology that encompasses protection and hope, where special people deserve special care.

This Organisation was established in 1956 by the late Leon Segal and his wife, Fanny whose only child, Selwyn, suffered from a disability.  It was integrated into the Chevrah Group in 2005.

Today Selwyn Segal incorporates:

  • The Selwyn Segal Centre in Sandringham which is set among well-groomed, tranquil gardens and provides accommodation, therapy and stimulation for 113 residents and services to a further 25 daily visitors in the Day Care Centre

  • Kibbutz Lubner is located in Olifantsfontein, Midrand, and is a hugely successful project. There are 18 people who live in the renovated 2-storey farmhouse and thrive on the dignity of their work and the very real pride and joy they derive from producing food from the earth

  • Camp David is a holiday site set in the beautiful Magaliesberg mountains. The Camp was established in order to allow residents of the Centre and its allied facilities the opportunity to venture out of their protective environment and experience the joy and beauty of the wider world of nature.

  • Finkelstein TLC is a school for Jewish children with special educational needs. In 2007 the Chevrah Kadisha incorporated this school into the Selwyn Segal. It is situated on the Selwyn Segal site within its own campus and caters to almost 30 children ranging in age from 4 to 21 years, each with differing levels of impairment - physical, intellectual, social, emotional, behavioural and academic. Finkelstein TLC is one of a kind. Historically, Jewish children who did not conform to the requirements of the mainstream Jewish educational system had no choice but to attend special schools with no Jewish input whatsoever. The goal of Finkelstein TLC is to educate these special-needs children within an environment of Judaism and professionalism. Highly qualified and committed staff and professional therapists provide a setting in which the children can grow and develop to their potential, empowering them to become valuable and functional members of the community. Skills training is also provided to students who have reached their intellectual plateau so that they can eventually find their niche in the protected or open labour market.
